She likes ants

Every custom order starts with a brief. Usually, it’s "she likes vintage" or "he wants something chunky" But then, I got this one - "She likes ants".
Not "she likes nature" Not "she likes trees" Just... ants. For an engagement ring.
My first thought? "How on earth do I make an insect that usually ruins a picnic look like a romantic, high-end proposal piece?" I spent a good minute staring at a blank sketchbook, wondering if I should include a tiny magnifying glass.
But then it hit me. This wasn't about making a bug ring. It was about minimalism and the beauty of the unexpected.
The Tiny Challenge
To add to the complexity, the client has a super small ring size. We’re talking barely enough real estate to fit a hallmark small. I had to find a way to incorporate the ant motif without the ring looking like a biology project gone wrong.
I decided to lean into a clean, minimalist aesthetic. I wanted the ants to be a secret - something you only notice when you really lean in to admire the craftsmanship.
The Anatomy of the Design
We went with 14K white gold for that crisp, modern backdrop. At the center sits a stunning Garnet gemstone. There’s something intense about a deep red garnet, it feels like the heart of the colony.
If you look at the band, the ants are sculpted directly into the metal, their tiny legs grip the very structure that holds the stone in place. They’re working together to present the gem. It’s symbolic, it’s subtle, and - dare I say - it’s incredibly classy.
I’m incredibly proud of how this one turned out. It proves that even the weirdest inspirations can result in something sophisticated if you approach them with the right amount of obsession.
